VSA Partners’ Partner and Client Engagement Lead Jamie Koval was recently appointed the Joyce C. Hall Distinguished Professor of Design at the Kansas City Art Institute. Koval brings his long history of design and branding expertise to KCAI for a series of lectures and workshops throughout the 2013-2014 school year; he also helps shape the school’s graphic design curriculum and prepare senior-year students for their theses and final semester.
The position was named in honor of Joyce C. Hall, founder of Hallmark Cards, and Koval joins a distinguished group of designers who have previously held it, including Ivan Chermayeff, Milton Glaser and Katherine McCoy. “We’re excited to welcome Jamie to the KCAI graphic design department,” said Michael Kidwell, Interim Chair of Graphic Design at KCAI. “He has built a national reputation for great branding work, and we are delighted to be able to expose our students to his expertise and longstanding professional experience.”
But Kidwell wasn’t the only one excited by Koval’s visit. A number of KCAI students wrote to offer their thanks for his informative inaugural visit this past September:
“Enthralling. Unbelievable. (Too) short. Amazing. Spectacular. Highlight (of my week/month). Engaging. Interactive.” – Anna De Sando
“It was great getting to know someone like Jamie who has accomplished so much and is still a wonderful down-to-earth type of guy. I am so excited to have him become a part of our studio family!” – Alexandra Khoder
“The way he made his career sound gave business a more personal and admirable approach, in my opinion. It helped give some insight on efficient ways to perceive design as a profession.” – Trent Roach
Koval visited KCAI earlier in December and visits next in February. You can follow KCAI’s Department of Graphic Design on Facebook or visit their website to learn more about the program and upcoming events.
