Scientists at the Janelia Farm Research Campus of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute are working to solve one of biology’s great mysteries: how nerve cells enable animals to perceive and respond to the world around them.
Understanding the mechanisms of the brain is a daunting task that could take decades. The biologists, physicists, chemists, engineers, computer scientists and mathematicians at Janelia Farm are tackling it with creativity and cutting-edge technology. This brochure introduces some basic concepts of genetics, neuroscience, imaging and computational biology. It’s an HHMI partners’ guide to understanding the science underway at Janelia Farm. The Janelia Farm Research Campus allows scientists freedom from the constraints that often limit their ability to do creative work. The scientists at JFRC work in cross-disciplinary teams to solve challenging problems that are generally difficult to address in the typical research environment.
