“HHMI Bulletin” is Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s signature print communication vehicle a vitally important tool for presenting its groundbreaking work.
The publication is key to keeping the scientific community informed on the latest developments at HHMI, and for eliciting applications for HHMI projects and programs such as Janelia Farm, a 689-acre research campus now underway in northern Virginia. With the institute, VSA examined the “HHMI Bulletin” from brand, content and design viewpoints, considering the needs of external audiences and internal stakeholders. A series of stakeholder meetings, audits of peer publications and research of examples in related fields led VSA to redevelop visual elements of the magazine’s brand expression (typography, photography, illustration, use of color and style). The redesigned publication contemporized HHMI’s voice and identity, refreshing the perception of HHMI as a source of scientific innovation and contemporary education in biomedical research.
